カルチャーショックと多様性

日本で一番のカルチャーショックは何でしたかと聞かれると、人は生卵や納豆、あるいは分刻みの電車を想像するかもしれません。
けれども私にとっては、ウォーターパークがそうでした。本当です。
ウクライナから日本への避難を決断してから、実際に日本へ足を踏み入れるまでには1か月もなく、準備をする時間や、好奇心を持つ時間さえない白紙の状態（タブラ・ラサ）、何の指示も受けていない人間として到着しました。
それでも、寿司には驚きませんでした。ウクライナでも日本食は愛されています。ただ、私たちなりのやり方で、巻き寿司にクリームチーズを挟んだりと、日本のシェフが聞いたら静かに戸を閉めてしまうのでは、というものもあります。
ただ、それはお互い様なのかもしれません。日本でレトルトのボルシチを何度か食べてみましたが、ウクライナのそれとはまた異なるもので、一種の文化的なお返しとして受け止めています。
私は、納豆を好きになり、梅干しのすっぱさにも怯えなくなり、歌舞伎の美しさにも触れて、もう大丈夫だと思っていました。
ところが、ウォーターパークで足が止まりました。
ヨーロッパのウォーターパークは、混沌とアドレナリンの舞台です。人生観を揺さぶるほどスリリングな滑り台から、すごい勢いでプールに放り込まれます。波、轟音、少しの恐怖とたくさんの笑い。泳ぐ、遊ぶというとてもシンプルなものです。
一方、日本ではレジャー施設の細やかさや、水遊び空間として安全面などの秩序が守られていると感じます。ただ、その中でも流れるプールはウクライナでは見かけないもので、少し不思議な感じがしました。多くの人がゆっくりと円を描くように、同じ方向に、急ぐ様子もなく、ただ静かに漂います。
私はそこに立ち、広い海はすぐ近くにあるのに、周りの人々と輪になって、水の流れに身を任せるのはなぜなのだろうと考えました。答えは見つかりませんでした。けれども答えを探すことではないのかもしれません。
カルチャーショックとは、多様性に気づいた瞬間なのではないでしょうか。理解しきれない喜びに気づく瞬間はとても貴重で、自分の世界を広げてくれます。

Culture Shock and Diversity

What was my biggest culture shock in Japan?
When people ask me about my biggest culture shock in Japan, they usually expect something predictable: raw eggs for breakfast, natto, or trains that arrive with mathematical precision.
But no.
It was a water park.
Yes, really.
My arrival in Japan was sudden, almost accidental. Less than a month passed between the thought, “Maybe I should go,” and the reality of “I’m already here.” I was evacuated. There was no time to prepare - or even to be curious.
I arrived as a blank page. Tabula rasa. A person without instructions.
And no - sushi didn’t shock me.
In Ukraine, we love Japanese food. Just… in our own way. We put cream cheese in rolls and add sauces that would probably make a Japanese chef quietly leave the room and close the door behind him.
But it works both ways.
In Japan, I tried borscht from a packet. More than once. Out of curiosity.
Spoiler: it’s not borscht.
But it’s a kind of cultural revenge - and I accept it.
By that point, I had already accepted a lot. I had learned to like natto. I had stopped being afraid of umeboshi. I had even started to understand the beauty of kabuki.
I thought I was ready.
I wasn’t.
And then - the water park.
In Europe, a water park is chaos and adrenaline. Slides that make you question your life choices before throwing you into a pool like a human torpedo. Waves. Noise. A little fear - and a lot of laughter.
In Japan… it’s different.
This is how I see it: people move slowly in a circle. In one direction. As if they are part of a calm, almost ceremonial ritual.
You just… drift. Together with everyone else.
Hundreds of people. In a loop. No rush. No noise.
And I’m standing there, thinking:
Why?
Why step into this circular pool with strangers when the ocean is right there? Real. Vast. With empty beaches.
I couldn’t find an answer.
And maybe it’s not about the answer.
I still think about it sometimes.
Maybe culture shock is not about the things we dislike.
Maybe it’s about realizing that other people experience joy in ways you can’t fully understand
We had our borscht cooking class, inviting a real Ukrainian chef on June 16 in Kamagaya city.
I hope this cooking class serves as a wonderful opportunity for everyone to experience Ukrainian culture.
