ウクライナの懐かしい思い出

母親になったばかりでまだキーウに住んでいた頃、私は抱っこ紐で赤ちゃんを抱っこして冬の道を歩き、赤ちゃんに、自分自身に、そして世界全体に微笑みかけました。心は愛で満たされ、この小さな存在と一緒にいることに、心からの喜びを感じました。

冬でした。植物園へ向かっていました。あたり一面が雪に覆われ、空気は冷たく、息を吸うだけで鼻の中の水分が凍りつき、まつげに白い霜が降りるほどでした。赤ちゃんは温かく私の体に寄り添い、私は凍った道で滑らないよう慎重に歩きました。

ウクライナでは冬には花は見られません。木々の葉さえも珍しいのです。でも、ただ散歩に来たわけではありません。モクレンの剪定が済んでいるか確認したかったのです。モクレンは最初に花を咲かせ、私たちを楽しませてくれる木なのです。植物園では、選定された枝を持ち帰ることができ、一週間後に蕾が膨らみ、開く様子を見ようと思っていました。この花は、私をエキゾチックな気分にさせてくれました。

故郷では、モクレンの咲く庭を普通に散歩するなんて想像もできませんでした。庭などありませんでした。タイル張りの同じようなコンクリートのアパート、職場、学校、そして運が良ければスポーツクラブや小さな創作教室があるだけでした。夏は海ではなく、近くの村の菜園で働きました。

だからこそ、キーウでは周りのあらゆるものに、大きな喜びを感じていました。おそらく地元の人たちは、そんな私を理解できなかったと思います。

公園では、ローズヒップの茂みに立ち止まり、甘い実を食べました。隠れた棘を注意深く避けながら。氷で覆われたナナカマドの実を、まるでキャンディーのように舐めたものでした。鳥たちもこのごちそうが大好きだと知っていたので、いつも彼らのために一掴み、そしてベンチの近くで私を待っていたリスのためにも少し持っていきました。

リスもまた、私にとっては新しい存在でした。私の町どころか、ドネツクでさえ見かけることはありません。真っ赤で素早いリスは、白い雪の上にひときわ目立ち、枝から枝へと飛び移って人々を見ていました。

公園はほぼ街の中心部に位置していましたが、周囲の通りよりも低く、暖かかったです。そのため、まるで熱帯地方にいるかのような木々が生い茂っていました。

私はこの庭で自然を眺め、リスに餌をやり、少し体を温め、それから丘を登ってシェフチェンコ公園まで歩きました。そこでは、卵とチーズが入った、世界一美味しいクレープが売られていました。
そして家に帰ると、寝ている赤ちゃんをそっとおろして、私自身も少し眠りにつきました。

Memories of Ukraine

When I had just become a mother and was still living in Kyiv, I would walk the winter streets with my baby in a sling and smile - at him, at myself, at the whole world. My heart felt overfilled with love. I found genuine joy in being with this tiny creature who, at that point, hardly seemed human at all.

It was winter. I was on my way to the botanical garden. Snow covered everything, and the air was so cold that with the very first breaths, the moisture in my nose would freeze, and a white frost would settle on my eyelashes. The baby slept warmly against me, and I walked carefully so as not to slip on the icy paths.

In Ukraine, you don’t see flowers in winter. Even leaves on trees are rare. But I wasn’t going to the garden just for a walk. I wanted to check whether the magnolias had already been pruned - these trees are the first to delight us with their blossoms. In the botanical garden, you could collect the cut branches, and I hoped to bring a few home so that, a week later, I could watch the buds swell and open. These flowers felt almost exotic to me.

In my hometown, I could never have imagined an ordinary stroll through a garden where magnolias grow. There were no gardens. Only identical concrete apartment blocks tiled on the outside, work, school, and, if you were lucky, a sports club or a small creative class. Summer did not mean the sea - it meant working in the vegetable garden in the village nearby.

That is why, in Kyiv, I rejoiced in everything around me with such intensity that, perhaps, the locals could not fully understand me.

In the park, I would stop by rosehip bushes and eat the sweet berries, carefully avoiding the hidden thorns inside. I would suck on rowan berries glazed with ice like candy. I knew the birds loved these treats too, so I always brought a handful of grains for them - and a few nuts for the squirrels, who were already waiting for me near the bench.

Squirrels were something new to me as well. You wouldn’t see them in my town or even in Donetsk. Bright red and quick, they stood out sharply against the white snow, leaping from branch to branch, watching for people.

The park was located almost in the city center but lay lower than the surrounding streets, and it was noticeably warmer there. Because of this, trees grew that seemed almost tropical to me.

I came to this garden to look at nature, feed the squirrels, warm myself a little, and then climb up the hill and walk to Shevchenko Park, where they sold the most delicious crepes in the world - with egg and cheese.

And when I returned home, I would gently lay down my Sleeping Joy and try to get at least a little sleep myself.
