伝統の祭り「イワン・クパーラ」

　私たち家族が日本に避難して来て、今月でちょうど1年になろうとしている今、私は、2つの感情を抱いています。この2つの感情は、対極にあるとも言えます。
　ひとつは、祖国ウクライナの厳しい状況を受け、日夜心が揺さぶられているということです。ウクライナでは、1年以上危険な状況が続き、以前のような平穏な日常が戻るまでには、相当の時間が必要になると思います。毎日人々が亡くなるニュースを聞き、次々と友人が最前線へと送られる現実に強い恐怖を感じています。
　その一方で、日本では、得難い経験をさせてもらっています。日本、とりわけ私を受け入れてくれた鎌ケ谷市での経験により、コミュニケーション、学習、友情、仕事、ライフスタイル、考え方が少しずつ理解できるようになっています。
　ただ、日本や日本の人々をよく知るには、まだまだ1年という期間は短く、私にとっては謎が多く感じられるのが現実であり、もっと深く知りたいと願っています。
　
　そんな中、先日、これまでの休日とは異なる過ごし方をしました。長男の運動会に参加してきたのです。こちらの運動会は、みんなで一つのものを作り上げるという協調性の重要さを教えてくれました。私の子供時代とは大きく異なる息子の姿を見て、感動しました。今、私の子どもたちは、日本で育ち、日本の文化を学んでいますが、きっと大切な経験になるでしょう。
　
　さて、今回のコラムでは私の故郷ウクライナに、古代から伝わるスラブ民族の祭り「イワン・クパーラ」を祝う祭日について、取り上げてみたいと思います。
　毎年7月6日の夜から7日にかけて行われ、海や川など水辺近くに集まります。この日には悪霊が出て、人々の周りに来ると言われているため、火と水によって清めます。
　
　祭りの詳細は地域によって異なりますが、主に、保護と浄化の象徴として、大きな火を焚きます。たき火の周りでは、民謡を歌ったり、ダンスをしたりするほか、焚火を飛び越え魂を浄化する儀式を行います。この儀式はペアで行いますが、男女が手をつないで火を飛び越えると、2人の関係が強くなり、結婚生活が幸せになると信じられています。
　また、その日の夜の限られた時間に、シダの花が咲き、その花を見つけると幸福と富が保証されると信じられていますが、花が咲かない植物なので現実的には難しいです。
　水に関することでは、川に入ると治癒効果があるとされたり、女性は草花で編んだ花輪を水に浮かべ、遠くに流れていくと幸運や愛情をもたらされたりすると信じられています。
　
　日本でもきっと、たくさんのお祭りがあると思いますが、これから鎌ケ谷市で暮らしていく中で、日本のお祭りを体感できることを楽しみにしています。

This month, on the 18th, it will be exactly one year since I arrived in Japan.
I have conflicting feelings about this. On the one hand, I feel sad because for more than a year a full-scale war has been going on in Ukraine and the situation, unfortunately, is not getting better, people are dying every day and more and more of my friends are now at the front, and I am in fear of foreboding sad news. The dangerous situation in Ukraine has continued for more than one years, and I feel that it will take a considerable amount of time for the peaceful daily life to return.
　
On the other hand, living abroad is an incredible experience! This experience here, especially in Kamagaya, has allowed me to see other patterns of communication, learning, friendship, work, lifestyle and thought. I learned a lot and discovered new sides in myself and in people.
But Japan and you (Japanese) are still a mystery to me. Every day I try to understand you better.
　
Recently I was at a very unusual holiday for me, here in Japan my eldest son took part on a sports day at school, this holiday showed me how important it is to be part of one whole and how much we can do together. I watched and cried the childhood of my children is so different from mine. My children grow up in your country and absorb your culture. And it's a good experience.

On another continent in my homeland Ukraine, this month ukrainians are preparing to celebrate Ivano Kupala - this is an old Slavic pagan holiday.
Every year on the night of July 6-7, people gathered near open water. Slavs believed that on this day evil spirits come out and walk among the living. On this night, people are cleansed by fire and water - a magical symbols.

The details of festival vary from region to region. But the point is the same you need to be ready to meet with representatives of the other world and know how to protect yourself. The main tradition of the holiday is to build a huge fire as a symbol of protection and purification.
Folk festivals are organized around the fire, people jump over the fire, have fun. Usually they jump over fires in pairs, if a guy and a girl, holding hands, jump over the fire, this means that their relationship is strong and their married life will be happy.
According to legend, on the night of Ivan Kupala, a fern blooms, which they are looking for in order to make their most secret wish.
Also, unmarried girls guessed at the betrothed that night. The girls wove wreaths of flowers and grass and let them float on the water, and the guys got them out. If a girl kisses the young man who took out her wreath, they will be a couple.
　
I think there are many festivals in Japan. I’m looking forward to enjoying them while living in Kamagaya.
