新年を迎えるにあたり

　正直言うと、ウクライナの新年がどうお祝いされているかを書きたいとは思いませんでした。なぜなら、私たちは特別に新年をお祝いすることがないからです。でも、私は今、日本に住んでいて、日本の新年はウクライナとは全く違うということを思い出しました。
　
　想像してみてください。雪に覆われた村で、小さな家々には花輪の飾り、足元にはパリパリと気持ち良い雪、大晦日にはどの家にも明かりが灯り、木の上には新年の花輪、聞こえてくるのは音楽と笑い声、そして普段と違う騒がしい夜に興奮する犬の鳴き声。
　
　このような凍える夜にはストーブで暖を取るので、家々からは煙が立ち込めます。村ではたいていお互いを知っているので、人々は各家を周ります。もし知らない場合でも、苗字を言えば、どこの誰かはだいたい分かるのです。
　
　または新年の花輪で装飾された街を想像してみて下さい。街の中心にある広場には大きなクリスマスツリーが立っています。ステージ、音楽、大会、そして、スケートリンクがあるところも。大晦日から新年には一晩中行われる新年のお祭り。ホットワイン（スパイス入り）と、パンケーキ、パイ、ケバブ、フライドポテト、ピクルス、ザワークラウトなどのおいしい食べ物は間違いなく販売されているでしょう。
　
　家の中では、31日から1日まで、家族全員がテーブルの周りに集まり、時計が12時を知らせるチャイムが鳴っている間に必ずスパークリングワインを開けておきます。そうすれば、新年になった瞬間にお祝いの飲み物を飲むことができるからです。通りからは花火が上がり、「ハッピーニューイヤー！」という叫び声が聞こえたら、スパークリングワインで近所の人達や友人をもてなし、祝います。
　
　これは以前の様子です。でもこの2年間、この国では戦争があり、戒厳令があったので、ある地域では夜9時から朝5時まで、地域によっては、深夜12時から明け方の4時まで、家を出ることができませんでした。また、常に空爆のリスクもありました。多くの家族は、父親、夫、兄弟もしくは息子達が戦争に駆り出されて離れ離れになっており、彼らはこの新年は塹壕で迎えることになります。母親、妻、娘、息子達は安全な他国にいるかもしれません。
　
　このような現実に、私たちは対応せざるを得ません。多くの人達は親族をオンラインでしか見ることができません。ですから、家族がまわりにいるうちに、何度も抱きしめて下さい。

New Year

To be honest, I didn’t want to write about how we celebrate the New Year in Ukraine, since there is nothing special in our celebration, but then I remembered that I’m in Japan and your New Year is not at all like ours in Ukraine.
　
And so imagine a village covered with snow, small houses decorated with garlands, the snow crunches pleasantly under your feet and on New Year's Eve the lights are on in every house, you can see New Year's garlands on the tree, you can hear music and laughter, and also barking dogs, which are not used to such a noisy night.
　
Smoke is spreading over the houses as they heat the stove to keep warm on these frosty nights. People go to visit each other, our villages are not large and usually everyone knows everyone, and if they don’t know you can say your last name and people will certainly figure out “who you are” and where you live.
　
Or imagine the city all decorated with New Year's garlands, and a big Christmas tree stands on the main square. There is a stage with music and competitions. There may be a skating link and a New Year's fair that will be open all night, and they will definitely sell mulled wine (hot wine with spices) and delicious food: pancakes, pies, kebabs, fried potatoes and pickles, sauerkraut.
　
And in the houses the whole family gather around the table on the night of 31st to 1st and they always open sparkling wine while the 12 o’clock chimes are ringing so that they can drink this festive drink in the first seconds of the New Year. Fireworks and joyful howls of “Uuuuu...Happy New Year!!!” are heard on the street and we go with sparkling wine and treats to all our neighbors and friends to congratulate them.
　
This was the case before, but in the last two years it has not been so bright, since there is a war in the country and there is a curfew, which means that you cannot leave the house in some areas from 9 pm to 5 am, in another areas from midnight to 4 am. And there is always the risk of an air attack. And many families are divided because a father, husband, brother or son may be at war and celebrate this New Year in a trench. Or mother, wife, daughter, son can be abroad in a safer place.
　
The new reality is making its own adjustments; many see their relatives only online. So hug your family many times while they are around.
