The Sakura You Can’t Take With You
This morning I woke up very early and went to drink coffee beneath a sakura tree.
It is an old, large tree somewhere near Mount Aso. It stands as if outside of time -a heavy, slightly twisted trunk, and above it a cloud of pale pink blossoms.
It was dawn.
The air was still cool, the light just beginning to touch the ground. The birds were singing as if it were their first song. The dew shimmered -not like water, but like something alive that had woken up with me.
I sat with my coffee and looked at the tree.
And suddenly I felt not just joy, but gratitude.
For being here.
For the fact that my body can see, hear, breathe in, perceive the world.
And even gratitude toward myself - for bringing myself here. For not missing this moment.
It was a feeling of complete fullness.
When you don’t want to change anything. When the place you are in feels perfect. When the world is enough.
And then I thought about sakura.
This is an old tree. But its blossoms are entirely young.
They appear, bloom, and disappear almost immediately. Only for a week.
In Ukraine, we are grateful to trees for their fruit. A cherry tree is about generosity - about something you can gather, preserve, make your own.
But here, there is nothing you can take.
Only to look.
Sakura gives nothing except beauty.
And that beauty belongs to no one.
Perhaps that is why it is so valuable.
In a world where everything is measured by result and usefulness, suddenly there is something that exists only to be seen - and to disappear.
These blossoms are real. They exist.
But you cannot take them with you. You cannot preserve them. You cannot repeat them.
And that is what makes the moment so sharp.
Looking at the sakura, I thought about youth.
About a girl’s beauty.
It is the same - fragile, bright, elusive. It, too, cannot be repeated. It does not return.
You can be beautiful in different ways at different stages of life, but this kind - young, fresh - comes only once.
And suddenly I felt neither envy nor fear of losing it, but something else -
admiration.
The same as beneath the sakura.
I am a woman. I am thirty-six.
Perhaps by Japanese standards, this is already “after the peak.”
Perhaps in Europe, not yet.
But in that moment, it didn’t matter.
Because I understood:
youth is not something to hold on to.
It is something you can look at.
Like sakura.
