I Learned to Love Red Beans.
I discovered, quite unexpectedly, that I love red beans.
It happened almost by accident. We were walking through shops, and my son said he wanted sakura mochi.
So we made them at home.
I watched him eat them with such pleasure - one, then another, then a third - and decided to try one myself.
I had tried them before, though. At the very beginning, when I had just arrived. Back then, they didn’t impress me at all. The taste felt too sweet. And strange. Beans weren’t supposed to be sweet - at least not in the coordinates I grew up in. It didn’t fit into my logic or my experience.
And then - suddenly.
I liked it.
Not “I got used to it.” Not “I can eat it.”
I liked it.
And that surprised me more than the taste itself.
What changed in me?
When did it happen?
I didn’t do anything for it. I didn’t try to make myself like it, didn’t convince myself, didn’t consciously adapt.
And yet - something had shifted.
Maybe it isn’t about understanding. Some things become close in a different way - slowly, almost imperceptibly.
Through the air you breathe.
Through the place you live in.
Through the days that repeat and quietly accumulate.
And at some point, everything suddenly begins to feel like yours.
I think about how many things we reject simply because we don’t understand them - and how often understanding isn’t even the point.
It’s about a feeling.
About something that suddenly seems natural.
Pleasant. Harmonious.
That’s how two flowers in an ikebana arrangement stopped unsettling me - even though in Ukraine an even number of flowers is only brought to the dead.
I began to understand layering in clothing. In Ukraine, beauty is often tied to sexuality. In Japan, you can be beautiful without revealing yourself.
And then - cicadas.
I already know: wherever I go next, I will miss them.
And perhaps the clearest way to explain these changes is through my children. For them, these tastes, these sounds, these forms have always been natural - because this is where their childhood unfolds.
Sometimes it feels as if something like a familial bond is forming between me and this culture - not through origin, but through sensations already rooted in my children, and slowly, through them, taking root in me.
I wonder how else Japan will change me.
