After Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day has long passed, yet a faint aftertaste still lingers - like the sweetness of a dessert that was just a little too rich.
For those who are single, it can feel slightly awkward: the celebration seems to move past you, often leaving you without attention and without a gift.
In Japan, the day follows its own choreography. Women give chocolate first, then wait for March and “White Day,” when men return the gesture.
During my first year here, this felt unfamiliar. In Ukraine, things are different: women more often receive gifts, or couples exchange them equally. There is no suspended interval of waiting.
I loved this day at school. It was the time of paper valentines - small heart - shaped cards filled with confessions, compliments, quiet hints of affection. I sometimes feel I belonged to the last generation that still cut them out with scissors and secretly signed them, trying to disguise our handwriting.
We arrived at school carrying entire stacks. Valentines were sent anonymously. A makeshift mailbox stood in the hallway, and throughout the day students slipped their messages inside. By evening, they were delivered to their recipients.
Some received many. Some received none.
I especially remember the year I didn’t receive a single valentine. I was already preparing to go home, coat on, when I suddenly found a small paper heart in my pocket from an unknown sender. For a long time afterward, I wondered who that secret admirer might have been.
It was a fragile kind of courage - sending valentines to boys from different classes and waiting, nervous and hopeful, for a response.
There was usually a school disco as well. You could meet someone, invite them to a slow dance - the kind danced in pairs. And there were always the “white dances,” when girls asked boys first. I remember how much courage it took simply to show your feelings.
Now I live in Japan and I am still learning to recognize its quieter forms of attention. To be honest, I often miss them. Many foreign women and men begin to feel that perhaps we are simply not attractive to Japanese people. But maybe it is not the absence of affection - only a language of feelings we have not yet learned to read.
March has already arrived.
I go to buy myself flowers - perhaps healthier than chocolate or cookies.
On this day, I no longer need to be brave, to ask first, or to wait for an answer.
