In the midst of a quiet Japanese winter
Spring is already in the air. I like that in Kamagaya, where I live, nature does not test me for endurance. In winter, there is no need to clear snow-covered paths; the sun often appears without being asked, and greenery and flowers never fully disappear, even in the colder months. By February, it already feels as though spring has arrived.
It is easy to wrap oneself in this softness - in the quiet comfort of the place, in the stillness of the streets, in the restrained politeness of the people around me.
Sometimes I want to avoid the awareness of who I am. To become a person without nationality, without history, without a country. Without a mission, expectations, or obligations. Simply to live - in the present day. And from time to time, I truly manage to do that.
But you cannot escape yourself. Especially when you live abroad. Here, you are perceived through your body - your appearance, your language, your accent. Attitudes toward you are often shaped not by conversation, but by an imagined idea of the country your interlocutor believes you come from.
At times I think I was fortunate to be born Ukrainian, rather than a citizen of a state whose name today evokes fear or hatred. We carry responsibility not only for our own actions, but also for who we were born as - whether we want to or not. We do not choose this, even though it sometimes feels as if escape were possible.
This new year left no time to recover from the tragedies of the previous one. We entered it with new wars and new human losses. Scrolling through the news, it feels strange that hell and paradise can exist simultaneously.
I remember the first days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Strangely, it was then that I felt I was truly alive, that my life mattered - precisely in that moment. The uncertainty disappeared. And uncertainty is the most frightening thing of all: waiting, not knowing, paralysis.
I drink my coffee and watch buds swelling on still-bare trees. At the same time, somewhere people are freezing, suffering, dying. It has always been this way, throughout the entire history of humanity.
People often ask me what can be done to stop wars. I have no answer that would bring comfort. Perhaps it is beyond our control - much like earthquakes or oceans.
I fled from danger. Others had the same opportunity and chose to stay. It is hard for me to say who has it easier. I know only one thing: I am endlessly grateful that I had a choice.
Children should not see war. Adults may choose their missions, but children have the right to childhood.
I live here, in the midst of a quiet Japanese winter, and every day I remember this: the ability to live without fear is not a given - it is a gift.
