My Son's Summer Holiday
I went to the Parent-Teacher Meeting.
(And then Yakov's teacher asked this is true Ukrainians wear their clothes backwards and inside out? Because he said so.)
- Yakov, why do you keep telling everyone that Ukrainians wear their clothes backwards and inside out?!
- Oh! Did you tell them the truth?
… No.
- Mom, you’re supposed to always be on my side.
And then summer began.
“They say that summer is a little life.” That’s what people often say in Ukraine.
My boys have barely opened their eyes, and they’re already getting ready to see their friends. School is over, but the habit of waking up early is stronger than summer vacation.
- Boys, at least wait until nine. People are still sleeping.
They nod obediently. But a few minutes later they’re already standing on the balcony, peering into the courtyard.
- Is anyone out there?
Sometimes it isn’t my boys who go looking for friends first. It’s the neighbor’s son who rings our doorbell.
- Is Yakov home?
A minute later they’re all racing barefoot down the stairs.
Even early in the morning, summer in Japan offers little relief from the heat. So the children spend the day drifting from one apartment to another - wherever the air conditioner is running.
They carry thermoses, little backpacks filled with snacks, insect boxes, or mysterious treasures. They’re always ready to catch something, trade something, or invent a new game.
No one really invites anyone over. In the morning the children dash out of the house, and parents know they may not see them again until evening. Or they might suddenly come back with five more kids in tow. Somehow, everyone seems to have accepted that this is just how summer works.
More than once I’ve gone to the store for just ten minutes and returned to find my apartment full of tomodachkas.
That’s what my sons call their friends. The Japanese word tomodachi met a Ukrainian suffix, and together they created a word that exists only in our family.
By evening the whole neighborhood fills with children’s voices. Somewhere they’re playing soccer. Somewhere they’re building a secret base. Somewhere they’re arguing with the seriousness of people deciding the fate of the world.
The younger one is usually the first to run home. He asks for water, a hug from Mom, blurts out a few scattered stories, and disappears again almost as quickly as he came.
The older one comes back when dusk is already settling in.
- Where have you been?
- We were catching crickets for a praying mantis. And we found treasure.
- Where?
He smiles.
-I can’t tell you. It’s a secret.
I don’t ask any more questions.
In the evening, I step out onto the balcony.
-Yakov! Petro!
Several voices answer at once from below:
- Five more minutes!
I don’t call them a second time.
Because somehow, those five minutes no longer belong to me.
Now, they belong to summer.
