Making a call from a public phone
Telephone numbers in Japan consist of an area code, a local exchange code
and the subscriber number. To make a call from a public phone, take the
receiver off the hook, insert your coin(s) or telephone card and dial the
number you want. (When your time is almost up you will hear a beep. If
you wish to continue your call you should insert more coins.)
Note that when you are dialing within the same area code, all you need
to dial is the local exchange and the subscriber number. For example, if
you are dialing a subscriber number with area code 047 from within the
047 area, you do not need to dial 047.
Two kinds of mobile phones are used in Japan. One is a cellular phone (keitai denwa) and the other is PHS. A cellular phone covers a wide area, and is accessible even when you are moving around. There are some cellular phones that allow you to make a phone call in any part of the world via satellite. PHS cannot be used in vehicles, but it is accessible when you are underground where an antenna is available. Fees for PHS are cheaper than for a cellular phone. You can purchase and apply for a contract for both mobile phones at electric appliance or camera retail stores. You will need ID such as your driver’s license, foreign registration card, passport, and either a credit card or bank passbook (and your seal). Costs include a handling fee and the mobile phone itself. You will be billed for phone charges (phone line plus the calls you make) monthly. For details on mobile phone companies, please ask at an electronics store which handles mobile phones.
International calls can be made from your home telephone or from public telephones. The rates, areas that can be called and dialing procedures vary according to the telephone company. You have to become a subscriber before you can use these services. Please contact the telephone company directly.
