Japan uses city gas and propane gas. These are two different kinds of gas, so you must be careful to use the right appliance with the correct gas. If the appliance is not right for your area, it will be a fire hazard.
When you move into your living accommodation, notify the gas company in
advance to come and open the gas valve and check the appliances in your
home. Safety checks on gas appliances are conducted by the gas company
every three years. You can pay your gas bill by automatically transferring
funds from your savings account or by invoice at a bank or other financial
institution.
Before you begin to use propane gas, notify the real-estate agency, your
landlord or a local propane gas dealer. Propane gas comes in a gas cylinder.
When the cylinder is empty, contact your local propane gas dealer to bring you a full one. In some cases, the gas cylinder is provided with a meter and you will be asked at regular intervals to pay for the amount of gas used.
CAUTIONS:
When you are using a gas appliance, circulate fresh air into the house
by opening a window or turning on a ventilating fan. When you cook with
gas, never leave the stove unattended. When you heat a bath, always be
sure the water intake hole is covered with water or else a fire may start.
In case of emergency
|
Ÿ |
If you smell gas, close the gas supply valve completely and open the windows and doors to circulate air. Never use a ventilating fan or any other electrical appliance, including lights, as this may cause a gas explosion if there are sparks in the air. |
|
Ÿ |
Do not light matches or cigarettes.
|
|
Ÿ |
In case of an earthquake, turn off the gas and close the gas supply valve tightly. |
|
Ÿ |
City gas is lighter than air, but propane gas is heavier than air. It stays low to the ground and accumulates behind furniture and other appliances where air does not flow freely. |
