| The Japanese Education System |
The Japanese educational systemcomprises 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of high school, and either 2 years of junior college or 4 years of university. Education is compulsory up to the end of junior high school, but most junior high school graduates progress to senior high school.
Admission to senior high school and higher education requirespassing an entrance examination.Optionaleducation includespreschool(nursery school and kindergarten), vocational school, college, university and graduate school.
The Japanese school year begins in April and ends in March of the following year.

Nursery schools (Hoikuen) provide care for children of parents who have full-time work, or who are otherwise unable to take care of their children during the day. There are 6 nursery schools in the City (4 public schools and 2 private schools). Each school has different rules about the age from which children may attend, but most accept children aged between 3 months and 5 years. Income restrictions apply for admission.
There are 10 private kindergartens (Yochien)in the City. No income restrictions apply for the private kindergarten admission.

In Japanfs educational system children who have attained the age of 6 years old start elementary school and proceed totheir junior high school.Japanese schools run on a trimester schedule. Most elementary and junior high schools in Japan are public.
There is no canteen in public elementary schools and the students all eat the same school lunch with their teacher together in their classrooms.
Children under the age of 15 are not allowed to work either full time or part time.
