People who live in Japan are required to enroll either in the Employee’s Health Insurance Plan (Hiyosha Hoken) at their place of employment or the National Health Insurance Plan (Kokumin Kenko Hoken). Under the National Health Insurance Plan, medical expenses are covered by the insurance premium paid by the individual, the state and each prefectural government. Requirement: Registered foreign nationals who are qualified to reside in Japan for one year or more and do not belong to any other health insurance plans are required to subscribe the National Health Insurance at the time of moving into the city or withdrawing from the health insurance plan of their place of employment. Insurance Premium: Upon subscribing the National Health Insurance, each household (or family) is issued with a health insurance certificate.
